Ammonia Gas Leak in Tiruvallur Factory: Death Toll Rises to Nine

New Delhi: The death toll from the ammonia gas leak on at a private seafood processing unit near Periyapalayam in Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu has reached to nine, while 69 people are undergoing treatment in various hospitals, reported The Hindu on Tuesday (June 23).

The latest casualty is a woman from Assam, identified as Anjila Soren. So far, all nine victims are women workers from Odisha and Assam.

The workers who have been affected by the accident are mostly from Assam, Odisha, Jharkhand, Kerala, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.

The leak occurred at the manufacturing unit of a private company named Peter & Paul Seafood Export Company, located near Periyapalayam. Nearly 120 migrant workers, mostly women labourers from Assam, Odisha and Jharkhand, were on the factory premises at the time. The company had provided accommodation for the workers within the campus.

Apart from Soren, seven other deceased have been identified as Shibani, Jumani Juang, Geetha Juanga, Purinama Juanga, Champabati Juanga, Parbavathi Juanga and Sita Hasda. One of the deceased couldn’t be identified yet, reported Press Trust of India.

The ammonia gas leak was reported on Sunday (June 21) at the seafood processing facility in Kannigaipair/Manjangaranai area near Periyapalayam in Tiruvallur district.

Tamil Nadu chief minister Vijay has announced Rs 2 lakh each to be paid to the families of the deceased persons from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund.
