Delhi: Man Swept Away While Working on Drain Project Found Dead

New Delhi: Two labourers died, and one is missing, after they were swept away while they were constructing a cemented wall on a 30-foot-deep drain in west Delhi's Khayala area, police said.

The three labourers had been swept away after the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) suddenly resumed water supply into the drain while they were working, officials said.

The body of a 25-year-old Devinder Sharma, who had been missing for two days, was working on the project along with twelve other workers. His body was found on Sunday, police stated.

Sharukh (25), a resident of Bulandshahr in UP, was pulled out of the drain on Friday and was rushed to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival while Ankit (19), a resident of Hardoi in UP, is still missing, a senior police officer said.

The National Disaster Response Force will resume the search for Ankit on Monday morning.

The DJB had contracted the project to Pratibha Industries, a private company, and a case was registered against the contractor. The project supervisor, who was arrested for negligence, has got bail, police added.

A DJB team, led by vice chairman Dinesh Mohaniya, visited the site. Mohaniya said, "We stand with the families of the deceased and those missing in this hour of crisis. Compensation will be given to them."

On Friday, the day of the incident, twelve labourers were working on the drain used to treat water before it entered the Yamuna river on Friday. Around noon, Shahrukh, Ankit and Sharma entered the drain to take measurements for its cover.
