Kolkata: Four Workers Die While Cleaning Manhole, 3 Injured
Kolkata: Four workers died after getting trapped in a manhole while cleaning an underground drain in Kolkata on Thursday, February 25.
A total of seven labourers had gone into the manhole, Anandabazar Patrika has reported.
At around noon, locals informed Regent Park police that the workers had not been seen for a while. Soon, police, personnel of the disaster management group and fire tenders arrived at the spot.
While all seven were rescued, four succumbed in hospitals. Three are undergoing treatment.
The deceased have been identified as Jahangir Alam, Ali Liyakat Ali, Sabir Hossain and Mohammad Alamgir, all from Malda district in West Bengal, according to Indian Express.
Local media has reported that all the victims are between 20 and 25 years old. Locals have said the manhole had been choked by mud and silt and the labourers had gone to clean it.
