Watch | 'India Has a Very Serious Employment Crisis and the Budget's Done Little to Tackle It'

Mahesh Vyas, CEO of CMIE, said the government should not take comfort from month to month changes in levels of employment.

In a 39-minute interview with Karan Thapar for The Wire, Mahesh Vyas said the government should not take comfort from month to month changes in levels of employment. He was referring to the fact in December his organisation, the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy, said employment had fallen by 14.7 million whereas in January it increased by 11.9 million.

He said, “Month on month improvements could be a reflection of local factors and local trends and do not necessarily reflect the full picture”. More importantly, compared to January 2020 employment in January 2021 is lower by 9.8 million.
