New Delhi: More than 500 MGNREGA workers from 15 states gathered at Jantar Mantar in Delhi over the last three days to protest against delayed salary payments and other concerns related to the scheme.
NREGA Sangharsh Morcha is leading the protest. Workers there complained that they did not get work when they demanded it, and questioned how no compensation was paid if workers were injured or even killed at the workplace.
“We are forced to eat dry chilli and water with roti, because we don’t have money,” one of the protestors, Kalulal Gurjar, told The Wire.
Many of them raised concerns about the NMMS App, which was launched in May last year to ensure proper monitoring of MGNREGA schemes and real-time attendance of workers at sites.
“The NMMS App is depriving workers of their right. Workers are not sure if they’ll get full payment as the app sometimes fails to record their attendance,” Shyam from the Asangathit Mazdoor Union, Rajasthan said.
