New Delhi: The Delhi Police has summoned Telangana chief minister Revanth Reddy to join their investigation on May 1 regarding the circulation of a doctored video of Union home minister Amit Shah on social media. The police have issued notices to five members of the Telangana Congress, including Reddy, who shared the video on X (formerly Twitter), sources told news agency PTI.
Reddy has been instructed to bring his mobile phone, which was allegedly used to post the fake video on X, when he appears for questioning, as per the sources.
The Delhi Police’s Special Cell registered an FIR on Sunday following a complaint from the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) under the Ministry of Home Affairs about the manipulated video of Shah. In the video, Shah’s statements suggesting a commitment to abolish quotas for Muslims in Telangana were altered to imply advocating the removal of all reservations.
Sources within the Special Cell indicated that arrests are likely to follow across the country.
Earlier, Amit Malviya, the head of the BJP’s IT department, accused the Telangana Congress of circulating a fabricated and potentially inflammatory doctored video of Shah. The BJP also filed a police complaint regarding the matter.
The FIR has been filed under Sections 153 (causing provocation with intention to cause riot), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc), 465 (forgery), 469 (forgery to harm the reputation of any party), and 171G (publishing false statement with intent to affect the result of an election) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and under the Information Technology Act, the police said told the news agency.
