Hyderabad: Former chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao's daughter and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLC K. Kavitha was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate following raids conducted by the ED and income tax officials at her residence in Banjara Hills on Friday, March 15.

She was arrested by the ED under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act in connection with the Delhi liquor scam case.

Kavitha had allegedly evaded her arrest by the ED after the agency served her notices to appear before it. She had replied to the notices saying that she could not go to the ED office as her petition seeking protection from arrest and challenging the summons was pending in the Supreme Court.

She appealed to the court, citing a previous ruling that instructed investigating agencies to question women only at their residences.

Nevertheless, Kavitha had appeared before the ED in New Delhi thrice. The CBI had recently named her as an accused after questioning her as a witness in the case.

At least 12 ED and CBI officials, including two women, arrived at Kavitha's house, accompanied by central forces, to carry out searches at her residence, sources said.

The protest by her and her husband D. Anil Kumar, claiming that the arrest was 'illegal' while their case was pending in court, went unheeded. Officials seized their phones and those of their staff.

The legal advisor of Kavitha, S. Bharat Kumar, was not allowed to enter the house. The raid began in the afternoon and is likely to continue into the evening.

The panchnama report of ED served on Kavitha said five phones belonging to her and others were seized following the search. A group of twenty persons led by Rama Rao unlawfully entered the house when the proceedings were in progress and created a ruckus. The BRS supporters tried to obstruct the vehicle of Kavitha as the ED drove her to the airport. The local police cleared the way for the convoy of vehicles up to the airport.
