Former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar Convicted For Murder of Two Persons During 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Wednesday (February 12) convicted former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar for the murder of two persons in Saraswati Vihar area of New Delhi during the anti-Sikh riots.

Kumar was produced before court from Tihar jail for the pronouncement, reported the Press Trust of India.

The conviction order was passed by Special Judge Kaveri Baweja and the arguments on sentence will take place February 18.

The case pertains to the killings of Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh on November 1, 1984.

While the Punjabi Bagh police station had initially registered the case, it was later taken over by a Special Investigation Team.

Kumar is currently lodged in Tihar Jail serving a life sentence handed down to him by the Delhi High Court in 2018 in a case pertaining to the killing of five Sikhs at Raj Nagar Part I in Palam Colony on November 1-2, 1984, and the burning down of a gurdwara in Raj Nagar Part II, reported The Indian Express.

The prosecution said in the present case that a huge mob armed with deadly weapons, had conducted large-scale looting, arson and destruction of properties owned by Sikhs to avenge the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

The mob thereafter targeted the house of the complainant in the case – Jaswant's wife – killing her husband and son. The mob also looted articles and set their house ablaze, alleged the prosecution.
