New Delhi: India has a new chief justice.

Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai assumed office as the Chief Justice of India today, becoming the 52nd to hold this position.

Justice Gavai is only second ever person from a community on the Scheduled Castes list to hold the top judicial position in the country. Justice K.G. Balakrishnan was the first, and was appointed in 2007.

LiveLaw reports that Justice Gavai is also the first Buddhist to become CJI.

India's president Droupadi Murmu administered oath to Justice Gavai at a swearing-in ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan today. Top cabinet ministers, and the prime minister, were present. The ceremony was broadcast live on official social media channels.

The judge will be CJI till November 23, 2025.

Two days ago, Justice Gavai was reported to have said that he will not take any post-retirement appointments.
