New Delhi: A bailable arrest warrant against self-styled Yoga guru Baba Ramdev and his associate Acharya Balakrishna has been issued by a Kerala court after a complaint was filed by Kerala drug regulators against Patanjali Ayurved for misleading advertisements on its healthcare products.
The warrant was issued by the Palakkad district court on Thursday (January 16), reported The Telegraph.
After multiple complaints were filed by Kannur-based ophthalmologist K.V. Babu, in November 2023, Kerala’s drugs control department had asked its offices across the state to initiate legal proceedings against Patanjali for allegedly violating the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, (DMR Act) 1954.
“Complainant absent. All accused served. Bailable warrant to all accused,” notes the the case status documented by the Palakkad court on January 16, 2025.
The advertisements had claimed that certain Patanjali Ayurved products could cure ailments such as high blood pressure and diabetes. However, such advertisements are prohibited under the DMR Act.
Babu, the complainant had complained to multiple authorities in the Centre and state in 2022 and had also sent his complaints to the Prime Minister’s office in January 2024.
The Palakkad court’s warrant comes after the Supreme Court warned states and Union Territories of contempt action if they fail to take action against misleading advertisements.
