New Delhi: The Maharashtra Police on Tuesday, June 7 asked suspended Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) functionary Nupur Sharma to appear before them on June 22 to record her statement in connection with her allegedly offensive remarks against Prophet Muhammad, an official said.
A first information report (FIR) had been registered against Sharma by the Mumbra police in Thane district of Maharashtra following her remarks, he said.
Accordingly, Sharma has been summoned by the Mumbra police to record her statement before the investigating officer on June 22, the official said.
Sharma, who was the BJP spokesperson, had made the comments during a TV debate nearly 10 days ago, which sparked a Twitter trend calling for a boycott of Indian products in the Gulf countries.

Condemning the remarks of the BJP members, Indian ambassadors in the Gulf region were summoned by their host foreign ministries, demanding a “public apology” from the Narendra Modi-led government.
In Kanpur, protests took place against Sharma’s comments, which escalated into a clash in which the police lodged FIRs against 1,000 unknown persons, with all 55 named accused persons belonging the Muslim community.
Separately, the Delhi Police has provided security to Sharma and her family after an FIR was registered on a complaint that she was getting death threats over her controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad.
