New Delhi: Paytm founder and CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma, who was arrested by the Delhi Police for allegedly ramming a Jaguar Land Rover into the vehicle of Benita Mary Jaiker, DCP (South district) on February 22, was released on bail last month, the Indian Express reported.

According to the newspaper, the incident took place outside Mother’s International School on Aurobindo Marg, when Sharma allegedly hit the vehicle of DCP Jaiker. He was arrested under Section 279 (rash or negligent driving) of the Indian Penal Code.

The police lodged an FIR on a complaint filed by constable Dipak Kumar, who was posted as driver with DCP Jaiker.

Constable Kumar told the paper that he first took DCP Jaiker to a petrol pump at around 8 am. An operator constable Pradeep was also with him and they reached a traffic jam near Mother’s International School. "I saw a gathering of people dropping their children (to school). I slowed down and asked Pradeep to get down to clear the traffic,” he said.

“I was waiting when a car came speeding from the side and rammed my vehicle. There was a Haryana registration number plate and the person managed to drive away. Our vehicle got damaged and Pradeep asked me to park on the side of the road. We informed our DCP and she asked me about the car. We told her that we had noted down the number, and then we lodged an FIR at Malviya Nagar police station,” he told the daily.

The Delhi Police traced the car with the help of the transport department and found out that the car belonged to a Gurgaon-based company. After the company told the police that the vehicle was given to Sharma, he was subsequently summoned to the Malviya Nagar police station, where he was arrested and released on bail. The car was impounded by the police.

Suman Nalwa, spokesperson for the Delhi Police, confirmed to the daily Sharma's arrest and release on bail.

Responding to the reports, a Paytm spokesperson told moneycontrol, “A complaint was filed in connection with an alleged minor motor vehicle incident. There was no harm caused to any person or property in the said incident. Media reports claiming the nature of the arrest are exaggerated, as even the complaint against the vehicle was for a minor offense under a bailable provision of law and requisite legal formalities were completed on the same day.”
