New Delhi: The Pune police on Tuesday (December 17) told the Bombay high court that it has granted permission to the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) to hold a rally commemorating the birth anniversaries of Tipu Sultan and Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad on December 24.

The information pertaining to the grant of permission was submitted before the division bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and P.K. Chavan, reported Bar and Bench.

The court, which was hearing a petition filed by the Pune district president of the AIMIM against the denial of permission for the rally, emphasised that the procession must adhere to the terms and conditions.

“What is this law and order situation? You are anticipating that something will happen. Law and order is your prerogative. Every time you raise the issue of law and order, when will you change your mindset?,” the court said, criticising the police for citing “law and order situation” as a reason for refusing permission for events.

All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muselimeen (AIMM) city president Faiyaz Shaikh had sought permission to organise a rally commemorating the birth anniversaries of Tipu Sultan and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad along with celebrations on the Constitution Day on November 26, 2024.

However, the Pune police had denied permission for a rally honouring the Mysore ruler citing objection letters received from another community.

Shaikh then moved the Bombay high court seeking permission to conduct the rally on December 24.

The high court had then asked the Pune police if there was a ban on celebrating Tipu Sultan’s birth anniversary. Thereafter, it had directed Pune police to chart out a route for the rally.
