Listen: 'CJI U.U. Lalit Has Injected Some Vim and Vigour in the Spines of the Judiciary'

The Indian judiciary has come in for criticism for showing urgency in some cases but delaying hearings on crucial issues. There is also a perception that the Supreme Court is leaning towards the political establishment rather than protecting the rights of the citizens.

“So many important issues are pending. CAA, Article 370, Pegasus, they have all gone on the back-burner,” says Supreme Court Senior Advocate Chander Uday Singh, in this podcast discussion with Sidharth Bhatia.

Singh, who has fought many public causes, such as the cases related to Aadhaar, says these kind of delays and “procrastination, rends the issue academic,” because things have moved on. One example, he says, is the interim order on the construction of the Central Vista, which has now been completed.

He says he has high hopes from the new Chief Justice U.U. Lalit who has “injected vim and vigour in the spines of the institution”.

He also talks about Umar Khalid, delays in the courts and undertrials who remain in jail for years and are finally declared innocent.
