Kolkata: A court in Kolkata's Sealdah has convicted Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, in the rape and murder of the trainee doctor at the city's R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Protests against the brutality had rocked the state, culminating in a hunger strike by junior doctors who demanded systemic changes to the state's healthcare system.

Roy is a 33-year-old and reportedly shouted that an "IPS officer" was involved and that the real culprits were let go, before being led away after the judgement. Earlier too, Roy has claimed that he was being framed.

The judgement by the additional district and sessions court convicted Roy under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita that deal with rape, murder, and causing death.

The sentencing in the case is to be on Monday, January 20. Clamour for the death penalty for the accused had been raised – especially by the Mamata Banerjee government which amidst criticism in the aftermath of the case passed a new law seeking to impose capital punishment in all incidents of rape.
