New Delhi: Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Friday reached Hathras to meet the family members of those who died in a stampede on July 2. The stampede had resulted in the deaths of 121 persons.

Before his visit to Hathras, Gandhi had also stopped at Aligarh’s Pilakhana village, where he had interacted with bereaved families.

“Many people have lost their lives I don’t wish to say this through political prism, however, there has been some negligence. It should be investigated. The most important thing is that these people should get compensation,” said Gandhi after meeting the families, reported The Indian Express.

Gandhi had started from Delhi on Friday early morning by road for Hathras. Other Congress leaders including state Congress chief Ajay Rai, state Congress in-charge Avinash Pande, party spokesperson Supriya Shrinate, had accompanied him, reported the Press Trust of India.

Relatives of the deceased persons said that Gandhi had assured them that he would help them.

The stampede had broken out on July 2 during a private religious function organised by a self-proclaimed godman.

The stampeded had taken place towards the end of a religious gathering or samagam organised by self-proclaimed godman Narayan Sakaar Hari alias Bhole Baba, who dresses up in white suit and wears a tie, in Mughal Garhi village in the Sikandra Rao area of Hathras.
