New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday allowed Mehbooba Mufti’s daughter Iltija Javed to travel to Srinagar and meet her mother. Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti has been under detention for a month.
According to a report in LiveLaw, the bench, headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, has said that Javed only has permission to meet her mother in Srinagar and that her liberty to travel to other parts of Kashmir is subject to permission from the authorities.
Upon Javed’s request to be allowed to move around Srinagar, the CJI responded by saying, “Why do you need to move around? It is very cold in Srinagar.”
Expressing concern over her mother’s health, Javed, who is currently living in Chennai, claimed that she has been unable to contact her mother since August 5, when the Centre imposed a curfew in Kashmir.

She claimed that she had to leave the state because she was restricted from leaving her house till August 22, according to a report in India Today. Upon the CJI’s enquiry as to what prevented her from moving from Chennai to Srinagar, counsel Nitya Ramakrishnan, who was representing Javed, said that it was the “intimidation” that she was subjected to from August 5 to 22
Attorney General K.K. Venugopal and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta objected to Javed’s plea and countered that she could approach the district magistrate. The CJI responded to this by saying that, “It is her privilege to move this forum. What is the objection in her going to meet her mother?”.
Earlier on Thursday, a CJI-led Supreme Court bench ordered the shifting of ailing CPI(M) leader Mohd Yusuf Tarigami to AIIMS in Delhi from Srinagar where he is under house arrest, based on a petition filed by CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury.
Previously, Javed had allegedly been detained at the family’s Gupkar Road residence in Srinagar. She had written to home minister Amit Shah then, asking which law she was being detained under.
