New Delhi: The Sealdah court on Friday (December 13) has granted bail to former principal of R.G. Kar medical college and hospital, Sandip Ghosh, and ex-officer-in-charge of Tala police station, Abhijit Mondal in the rape and murder case of an on-duty doctor. The parents of the slain doctor have expressed disappointment after the bail was granted today.>
The bail was granted due to the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI’s) failure to file a chargesheet within the stipulated 90-day period.>
Mondal faced allegations of delaying the filing of the FIR in connection with the rape and murder of the trainee doctor at the hospital on August 9, while Ghosh was accused of tampering with evidence in the same case. The case had sparked widespread outrage and protests.>
Ghosh will remain in custody despite being granted bail in the rape-murder case, as he is also being held on judicial remand in a separate case involving alleged financial irregularities at R.G. Kar medical college and hospital. Mondal’s lawyer said that his client would be released from the correctional home where he is currently being held on judicial remand.>

“We thought the CBI would speed up the investigation and bring those responsible to justice. But now, with the accused being granted bail, it feels like the system is failing us,” the mother of the doctor told news agency PTI. >
She added: “Every day, we wonder if this will be another case in which the powerful escape without punishment.”>
Similarly, the doctor’s father told PTI, “We are heartbroken. We trusted the CBI to deliver justice, but now we are left wondering if we will ever see justice for our daughter.”>
Following his resignation in August from R.G. Kar medical college, Ghosh was appointed as the principal of Calcutta National medical college and hospital within hours, only to be asked to take indefinite leave shortly after, amidst massive protests, and objections from the high court regarding his appointment.
The CBI is continuing its investigation into the crime, which was allegedly committed by civic volunteer Sanjay Roy.>
