New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Union government to take legislative action to regulate ‘obscene’ content on social media and OTT platforms.
The government said that some regulations are being contemplated, according to the Business Standard.
"There is some regulation in place, some is in contemplation," solicitor general Tushar Mehta, appearing on behalf of the government, told the court.
The court’s comment came in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking regulation of online content that may feature obscenity. A bench of Justices B.R. Gavai and A.G. Masi was hearing the petition.
The bench said that the PIL raised an issue of 'important concern' and tagged it with similar pending petitions, the Business Standard reported.
The court also sought a response from OTT platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, AltBalaji, Ullu Digital, Mubi and social media platforms X Corp,, Google, Meta Inc. and Apple.
Mehta said that he agreed with the concerns raised in the petition. He added that while he supported regulation, it should not amount to censorship.
