New Delhi: Student activist and Pinjra Tod member Natasha Narwal, who was arrested in cases pertaining to the communal violence in North East Delhi earlier this year, has told the Delhi high court that “large scale violence” took place in Tihar jail, because of which inmates are not being allowed to use video conferencing facilities.
Narwal’s lawyer, Adit Pujari, told the court that Tihar’s Jail No. 6, where Narwal is lodged, has been under a complete lockdown after there was violence against some prisoners on June 16, Bar and Bench reported. Narwal was not a victim of the violence.
The video conferencing request was for legal assistance. Narwal’s please said that it was imperative for her to communicate with her lawyer as a chargesheet had been filed against her in a Delhi riots case.
In addition to legal assistance, Narwal’s lawyer also said that she was entitled to five minutes per day to speak to her family, as per the Delhi Prison Rules.
Standing counsel Rahul Mehra, however, stated that the Director General (Prisons) had conveyed different orders to him, and that prisoners were not able to talk to their families at the moment because of the bad connectivity inside the jail.
