Umar Khalid Granted Interim Bail for Two Weeks to Attend Sister's Wedding

New Delhi: A Delhi court has on Thursday (December 11) granted interim bail to Umar Khalid for two weeks for attending his sister's wedding. The bail order came during the jailed activist's ongoing hearing of 2020 Delhi riots case at the Karkardooma court.

Additional sessions judge Sameer Bajpai granted the interim bail to Khalid, on furnishing of personal bond of Rs 20,000, with two sureties of like amount. The bail has been granted from December 16-29.

“During the interim bail period, the applicant shall not use the social media. During the interim bail period, the applicant shall only meet his family members, relatives and friends. Further, he shall remain at his home or at the places where the ceremonies of marriage as mentioned by him will take place,” the court said, as quoted by LiveLaw.

The former JNU scholar was last granted interim bail in December last year by the Karkardooma court for attending a wedding in the family.

Umar Khalid, along with Sharjeel Imam, Gulfisha Fatima and Meeran Haider, have been jailed for over five years under the draconian Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) over charges in connection to the ‘larger conspiracy’ case of the 2020 northeast Delhi riots.

Meanwhile, in the Supreme Court, on Wednesday, as the Delhi police concluded its arguments in the case, the bench reserved its verdict on the accused's bail pleas. The court said it intended to decide the matter before winter recess on December 19.

They have been repeatedly denied bail with most hearings so far being adjourned swiftly.
