'Saffronisation of Doordarshan': DD News' Logo Change to Saffron Draws Ire

Earlier, DD had also broadcasted 'The Kerala Story', sparking political backlash in Kerala. In addition, it had plans to air PM Modi's interview with Bill Gates. However, it wasn't aired because the EC conveyed that it could disrupt the level playing field.

New Delhi: The logo of DD News has been changed to saffron colour. Additionally, the word ‘News’ is also written in Hindi in the new logo.

Many users on social media have criticised the change in the colour of the national news channel’s logo.

“Saffronisation of Doordarshan. National Broadcaster DD News unveils its new logo on Ramanavami. This will be used as logo for the DD henceforth,” a user on X (formerly Twitter) said.

“National broadcaster Doordarshan colours its historic flagship logo in saffron! As its ex-CEO, I have been watching its saffronisation with alarm and feel — it’s not Prasar Bharati any more — it’s Prachar Bharati!” wrote TMC MP Jawhar Sircar, who also served as chief executive officer in Prasar Bharati from 2012 to 2016.

These changes in the logo and text coincided with the introduction of a state-of-the-art studio system and a revamped website, the official communique said, reported Manorama.

“The values are the same, but you will see us in a new form. Get ready for a never-before-seen news journey,” said a social media post announcing the changes. The channel’s pages on social media and YouTube have also been changed.

Earlier, DD had also broadcasted ‘The Kerala Story’, sparking political backlash in Kerala.

Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan had condemned Doordarshan’s decision, asking the public broadcaster to withdraw from screening the controversial movie, saying it would only “exacerbate communal tensions” ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

The opposition UDF also accused the BJP-led Central government of allegedly causing communal polarisation in Kerala with the screening of the movie on DD ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

DD News also had plans to air Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s interview with Microsoft founder Bill Gates. However, it didn’t happen because the Election Commission didn’t respond to Prasar Bharti’s proposal, and conveyed that it could disrupt the level-playing field during elections, reported the Economic Times.
