On August 2, 2019, it was announced that journalist Ravish Kumar was to receive Asia's highest civilian honour, the Ramon Magsaysay Award. Kumar was awarded for “harnessing journalism to give voice to the voiceless” and became the first Hindi journalist to receive it.

The award, named after former President of the Philippines Ramon Magsaysay, is given each year to individuals and organisations for achieving excellence in their respective fields.

The Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation (RMAF) described 44-year-old Ravish Kumar as one of India's most influential TV journalists and said that he was not hesitant in holding the senior-most officials accountable and criticising the media. This was also the reason why he had faced harassment and several threats.

The award will be given to Kumar on Monday, September 9, 2019, in Manila, Philippines.
