New Delhi: Former foreign secretary Muchkund Dubey died today (June 26).

He had been suffering from health complications for a few weeks, PTI reported citing one of Dubey’s friends.

Dubey, who began his career in the Indian Foreign Service in 1957, was foreign secretary from 1990 to 1991.

He has also served as high commissioner to Bangladesh and permanent representative to the UN’s European offices in Geneva. In the latter capacity he led the Indian delegation to the Conference on Disarmament, the world’s main multilateral body for disarmament negotiations.

After retiring from the foreign service, Dubey taught at the Jawaharlal Nehru University and later became president of the Council for Social Development (CSD), a social science research organisation, a post he held from 1995 till his death, the CSD’s website said.

It also said in a statement today that Dubey’s last rites will be held at the Lodhi Road Crematorium in Delhi on Thursday afternoon.

Dubey is survived by a wife and two daughters, PTI reported a friend of his as saying.

He had written for The Wire before.
