New Delhi: As protests continue to rock Bangladesh, over 300 Indian students left that country on Friday, July 19, by crossing over into India at various border points in the northeast, NDTV reported.

For over three weeks now, Bangladesh has been in the midst of chaos with students and security forces clashing over the reintroduction of reservation in government jobs. Nearly 64 people have died in the protests so far.

India’s ministry of external affairs (MEA) said the High Commission of India in Dhaka is coordinating with local authorities in Bangladesh to provide adequate security to students who are keen on travelling to India.

The HCI in Dhaka is also coordinating with the Border Security Force and Bureau of Immigration to help Indian students travel back home.

The MEA officials said border crossings in Benapole-Petrapole (West Bengal), Gede-Darshana (West Bengal) and Akhaura-Agartala (Tripura) will remain open for students and Indian nationals to arrive in India.

According to the information available from immigration officials at Gede-Darshana, a total of 245 Indian nationals, including 125 students, crossed over into India on Friday, July 19, until 8 pm. Even 13 Nepali students crossed the border, facilitated by HCI, Dhaka.

About 15,000 Indians live in Bangladesh, of whom around 8,500 are students, data from MEA indicates.
