Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) legislator Sangeet Som survived an attack by unidentified assailants at his residence in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut district on Thursday. The assailants opened fire and hurled a grenade at Som's house, according to police.

Empty cartridges and an unpinned hand grenade were recovered from the spot. Police is conducting an investigation to identify the assailants.

"Investigation is being carried out from all possible angles to identify and arrest the assailants," SSP Akhilesh Kumar said, as reported in Hindustan Times.

An MLA from Sardhana, Som had returned to his Mall Road residence around 1 am on Thursday. The assailants, who had allegedly followed the MLA, in a Swift car, opened fire minutes after he entered the house. The legislator has 'Z' category security. The guard at the gate foiled the car driver's  attempt to barge into the house. One of the assailants then hurled a grenade inside the house and fled.

The grenade, however, failed to explode. A bomb squad later took the grenade for examination.

ANI news agency quoted Som as saying that he had received a call two years ago that he would be killed with a grenade.

"I have not received any threats. But yes, I had received a call two years ago that I will be killed with a grenade," Som, a second time MLA, is quoted as saying.

An accused in the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots, Som had reportedly earlier received threats from ISIS in December 2015 and December 2017.
