Even as India reels under a deadly second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, votes for assembly elections to four states and one union territory – West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry – are being counted today.

Trends from various states have already come in – Trinamool Congress is leading in West Bengal, the Left Democratic Front in Kerala, DMK in Tamil Nadu, and the BJP in Assam and Puducherry.

Polling in West Bengal was held in eight phases – a decision criticised by many who said this could have led to the further spread of coronavirus. Mass rallies were held across states, which led the Madras high court to firmly rebuke the Election Commission for allowing them to continue.
