BJP Appoints Bihar Minister Nitin Nabin as National Working President
New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s parliamentary board appointed Bihar cabinet minister Nitin Nabin as the party's national working president on Sunday (December 14), almost three years after national president and now-Union minister J.P. Nadda's original term as national president first expired.
Nadda was reportedly the first person to become the party's national working president in June 2019, soon after which he became national president in January 2020. His term remains extended beyond its original tenure amid infighting in state BJP units and what is viewed as a tug-of-war between the saffron party and its ideological parent in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday afternoon, Nabin said that “when you work as a dedicated worker, the senior leaders of the party always take note”.
Nabin is a dynast in politics, being the son of former MLA Nabin Kishore Sinha, after whose death Nabin fought and won the bypoll to the now-abolished Patna West constituency in 2006.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the Bankipur, Bihar MLA and urban development and housing minister has “distinguished himself as a hardworking karyakarta [party worker]”.
“He is a young and industrious leader with rich organisational experience and has an impressive record as MLA as well as minister in Bihar for multiple terms. He has diligently worked to fulfil people’s aspirations. He is known for his humble nature and grounded style of working,” Modi said in his congratulatory message.
Nadda also extended his congratulations to Nabin, as did Union home minister Amit Shah, who recalled the Bihar minister's past roles as a national general secretary in the BJP, the president of its state youth wing as well as state-in-charge for Chhattisgarh.
Nabin's appointment comes a month after the BJP's resounding victory in the Bihar assembly elections, in which it emerged as the single-largest party in the state for the first time, overshadowing its alliance partner in the Janata Dal (United).
