India’s general elections are expected to take place between April and May this year. Statista Consumer Insights surveyed more than 24,000 urban online respondents in the country about which issues they consider to be the most pressing in India right now. As the following chart shows, unemployment was the answer most frequently selected, chosen by just over half of respondents. This was followed by education, poverty and the environment. Multiple options were possible in this question and it is important to note that survey respondents aged from just 18-54 years old.

Youth unemployment is high in India. As Statista Data Journalist Katharina Buchholz details, more than half of the 15 to 19 years old who were looking for work were unemployed at the end of 2022.
