New Delhi: Speaking at a rally in Madhya Pradesh’s Khargaon on Monday (May 6), Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that his party will waive farmers’ loans immediately if elected to power in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

He also alleged that if the BJP comes to power, it will do away with reservations as they exist today – while a Congress/INDIA alliance government will break the 50% cap on reservations.

“You know the reservations you enjoy? Modiji wants to end your reservation. His leaders have clearly stated this, that if we come to power, we will take reservations away from Adivasis, Dalits and backward classes, we will end reservations,” he said. “And I am here today to tell you, while they are speaking of snatching away reservations, we will increase reservations if we come to power. We will make it more than 50%. Today the limit is 50%, but we will nullify that and increase reservations for the poor.”

“Ask Modiji this, why do your people urinate on Adivasis? Why do they want to do away with the Constitution? And why do they want to end reservations? Whatever else he may say, ask him [Modi] this – do you want to end reservations for Adivasis, yes or no? And will you increase the 50% cap on reservations, yes or no? These are the main issues in this election – reservations, the Constitution and protecting the poor. We will give each family Rs 1 lakh, we will give the youth Rs 1 lakh, we will waive farmers’ loans, we will double the wages of ASHA and anganwadi workers, make the MGNREGA wage Rs 400. Ask Modiji, what will you do?

On the same day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was campaigning in Odisha’s Nabarangpur. He claimed that the people of Odisha – the state is also seeing assembly elections along with the general elections – have rejected the Congress and Biju Janata Dal, and claimed that his government had a proven record of countering corruption. He did not mention the recent developments regarding electoral bonds and the questions those have raised about possible corrupt practices by the BJP.

“If I send even one rupee, I won’t allow anyone to indulge in corruption. They can go to jail and indulge in food. You must have seen on TV that in neighbouring Jharkhand, mounds of cash have been discovered. Modi is catching people’s stolen money. I made a trifecta of ‘Jan Dhan’ accounts’, Aadhaar and mobile (phone) to stop the theft of poor people’s money,” he said.
