“In another resolution, the CWC unanimously requested Rahul Gandhi to take the LoP post in the Lok Sabha. All participants, in their view, were unanimous that Rahul Gandhi should become the LoP,” Congress general secretary K.C. Venugopal was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times after the CWC meeting.
As per Venugopal, Rahul Gandhi will take “two-four days to decide,” the HT report added.
Meanwhile, former Congress president Sonia Gandhi has been re-elected as the chairperson of the Congess parliamentary party.
Commenting on the performance of the Congress party in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, Sonia Gandhi said, “It was up against a mighty and malevolent machine that was doing its utmost to destroy us. It tried to cripple us financially. It carried out a campaign against us and our leaders that was full of lies and defamation. Many wrote our obituaries.”
She added: “But under the determined leadership of Khargeji we persevered. He is an inspiration to all of us. His commitment to the party organisation is truly extraordinary and we all have to learn from his example.”
The Congress party has won 99 seats in the 2024 general elections, a huge jump from 2014 and 2019 parliamentary polls when it had won 44 and 52 seats, respectively.
