New Delhi: The Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday (January 28) asked AAP Chief Arvind Kejriwal to provide evidence in support of his claim that the BJP government in Haryana was “poisoning” Delhi’s water supply in the run-up to the February 5 elections.
The EC did not issue a notice to the former Delhi Chief Minister but wrote to him saying that the “matter is being examined by the Commission in the light of provisions of MCC (model code of conduct) and relevant provisions of law,” reported The Indian Express.
Kejriwal has been asked to provide a “factual and legal matrix along with evidentiary support” of his allegation by 8 pm Wednesday (January 29).
Earlier on Tuesday (January 28), the BJP had urged the EC to bar Kejriwal from campaigning for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections.
A BJP delegation, comprising Union ministers Nirmala Sitharaman, Bhupender Yadav and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini met all three members of the EC, and requested them to ask the AAP leader to retract his charge and apologise for creating “panic” among people, reported the Press Trust of India.
The BJP leaders also demanded legal action against Kejriwal.
