New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday, August 12, accused the opposition Congress of a “conspiracy” to spread economic anarchy in the country and destabilise the Indian economy, while naming George Soros as the main investor behind Hindenburg Research’s “fictitious report” that named SEBI chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch and her spouse Dhaval Buch held offshore funds linked to the Adani group.

Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, BJP MP and former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad accused the Congress of spreading anarchy after the 2024 Lok Sabha election results.

“After being rebuffed by people, the Congress, its allies and its closest ally in the toolkit gang have conspired together to usher in economic anarchy and instability in India,” he said.

“Hindenburg is again at the same game. This report is released on Saturday, there is noise on Sunday so that the capital market can be destabilised on Monday.”

Prasad said that the Indian economy was growing at a very rapid pace which has been acknowledged by the World Bank and small investors are happy that India is a “safe, stable and promising market”.

Prasad alleged that Hungarian-American philanthropist Soros is one of the main investors in Hindenburg research, who routinely runs propaganda against India.

“Who has investments in Hindenburg? George Soros. He routinely runs propaganda against India that India is not a democracy, India is not safe. Now he has gone to this extent that Modi’s government should be removed. He is the main investor in Hindenburg. But the question is to the Congress party. What do you want? While hating Modi, Congress has started hating India. In their pathological hatred towards Narendra Modi Congress led by Rahul Gandhi and his toolkit friends have developed a pathological hatred towards India,” he said.

In February 2023 Soros had faced criticism in India from both the BJP and the Congress over his remarks that he “expect(s) a democratic revival in India”. Soros’s remarks came in reference to the Hindenburg report on the Adani Group published in January that year and the opposition’s attack on the Modi government.

While the Congress and other opposition parties in the INDIA alliance have demanded a joint parliamentary committee probe into the fresh allegations made by Hindenburg research, Prasad said that the grand old party wants to take India back to Jawaharlal Nehru’s “control raj”.

“Toolkit gangs don’t have anything to do with India’s development. But what about the Congress party that ruled India for 55 years?” he said.

“BJP wants to say with full responsibility that the present leadership of the Congress wants to create anarchy in India based on these fictitious reports,” he added.

In a statement on Monday, the Congress meanwhile reiterated their demand for a JPC and said that the SEBI “long considered a trustworthy global financial market regulator, is now under scrutiny”.

“Did the SEBI chairperson recuse herself from the Adani investigations? Do these conflicts of interest explain the prolonged investigation, a delay that has benefited both Adani and the Prime Minister while damaging Sebi’s reputation? How can a match proceed if the umpire herself is compromised?” said Congress MP and general secretary communications Jairam Ramesh in the statement. .
