Vinesh Phogat, star wrestler, is a contestant in the Haryana assembly elections 2024. Phogat faced disqualification just before the final match at this year’s Paris Olympics due to a weight gain.

Phogat is contesting the election from the Julana constituency in Haryana, where she has emerged a popular candidate. Phogat’s husband wrestler Somveer Rathi hails from the same area, which is why she is famous as the ‘daughter-in-law’ of the locality.

When The Wire spoke to local voters, there was a noticeable displeasure regarding the BJP-led Union government and the BJP government in Haryana.
