JMM Holds Protests Against Union Govt Across Jharkhand Against Amendment to MMDR Act, Demands Rollback
New Delhi: The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has said that it will continue to protest until the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Union government rolls back the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, reported Press Trust of India.
On Saturday (September 19), JMM workers protested at all the 264 block headquarters in the 24 districts in Jharkhand against the amended Mines Act.
“MMDR will cause revenue loss to the state exchequer, which will impact numerous schemes,” said Abdul Salam Ansari, JMM central committee member and the party’s spokesperson for Dumka district.
He added that the Act was against the interests of the state.
Ratan Lal Manjhi, JMM’s Bokaro district president alleged that attempts were being made to undermine the state’s rights over its mineral resources.
“The protest against MMDR will continue until the Centre rolls back the legislation. We will also stage a dharna at Lok Bhavan and in Delhi, if needed,” said Manjhi.
On the other hand, the Jharkhand BJP launched an MMDR Act awareness drive on Saturday which will continue till September 30.
“The JMM and the Congress are trying to mislead people by spreading confusion over the MMDR Act. But the BJP will reach people with facts and its benefits through an awareness drive between September 19 and 30,” said Jharkhand BJP president Aditya Sahu.
