The police in Chattisgarh have arrested a youth from Jammu and Kashmir on charges of sedition for posting “anti-India” content on his Facebook account.

Tauseef Ahmad Bhat, who is originally from Kashmir but studied and now worked in Bhilai in Chattisgarh, commented on, liked and shared several things “against India” on Facebook, such as ‘India Go Back’, the Indian Express reported.

The report added that Ratan Yadav, a coordinator for Bajrang Dal in Bhilai, reported Bhat’s Facebook activity to the police and lodged a formal complaint against him.

The inspector general of police Dipanshu Kabra, from Durg district in Bhilai, told PTI that they arrested Bhat on Thursday night at Sagar Railway Station in Madhya Pradesh. Bhat was on board the Jammu-Tawi Express which runs from Durg to Kashmir.

Sachin Atulkar, superintendent of police in Sagar, told the Indian Express, “We got information about this person from [the] Durg police. There was no resistance during arrest, and nothing objectionable was found on his person.”

The report added that he was booked under section 124 (a) of IPC (sedition), which defines the offence as as “whoever, by words, either spoken or written, or by signs, or by visible representation, or otherwise, brings or attempts to bring into hatred or contempt, or excites or attempts to excite disaffection towards, the government established by law in India”.
