Watch | 'Khalistanis Responsible for Lakhimpur Kheri Violence': UP BJP MLA
Lakhimpur BJP MLA Yogesh Verma held "Khalistanis" responsible for the violence that broke out in his constituency during farmers' protests in October 2021, which claimed the lives of eight people.
The Wire was in Lakhimpur on Monday, February 21, to get the pulse of voters in the constituency, where Verma is seeking re-election on a BJP ticket. Lakhimpur will vote in the fourth phase of the election on Wednesday, February 23.
"Farmers cannot do such a thing. They can't kill people. It was Khalistanis in the guise of farmers who created the violence," he told The Wire.
Verma acknowledged that flooding was a major issue in his constituency and said that the Uttar Pradesh government was working towards resolving the issue.
When asked about the poor public health system in Lakhimpur, he blamed it on the "70-year rule of the Congress" and said, "See what couldn't be done in 70 years, couldn't be done in mere five to seven years. However, we will set up more medical colleges and improve overall public health."
