New Delhi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge was announced as the chairperson of the Opposition-led INDIA alliance on Saturday, the Indian Express reported, citing sources. Meanwhile, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, who was appointed as the convenor, reportedly said that he would accept the role only if all parties reached a consensus, sources told the newspaper.

The decision was taken during a virtual meeting attended by the leaders of 14 Opposition parties constituting the bloc. The agenda of the meeting was to discuss seat-sharing for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee skipped the meeting.

Previously, Janata Dal (United) chief national spokesperson K.C. Tyagi expressed concerns as no decision had been made regarding the appointment of the convenor. The party had been advocating for its chief, Nitish Kumar, to be appointed as the convener of the bloc.
