Modi Must Not Dilly Dally, Waste Time, Says Rahul Gandhi on Pahalgam Attack

New Delhi: Lok Sabha leader of opposition and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi said on Wednesday (April 30) that in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack last week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi must not “dilly dally”, not “waste time” and act now.

“People have been killed in a cold-blooded manner and it is pretty clear who is responsible for this. The people who are responsible for this must pay the price. The prime minister has to take action and the action has to be clear and strong. Without any confusion,” he said at a press conference in New Delhi.

“The prime minister must not dilly dally, must not waste time, must make it very clear that India is not going to tolerate this type of nonsense. So he needs to act. He can act in whatever time frame he thinks necessary, but that needs to be soon. The prime minister has to act on it now, he should not dilly dally, he should not be in a confused state.”

Last week, 26 civilians were killed in a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam. Since then, Modi has promised strong action and said that those  who have conspired behind this attack will be “punished beyond their imagination”, while their remaining land will be “ground to dust”. He promised to identify, trace and punish every terrorist and their backers.

Last week, following a meeting of the cabinet committee on security (CCS) chaired by Modi, India announced a slew of measures including pausing the Indus Waters Treaty, expelling Pakistani military attaches and downgrading ties.

While another meeting of the CCS was held on Wednesday, no new measures or action have been announced.

On Tuesday, Modi chaired a key security meeting with the three defence chiefs and said the armed forces have full operational freedom to decide on the response to the Pahalgam terror attack.

Gandhi said that he had met the family of a victim in Kanpur on Wednesday and that they had demanded they be “given respect” and martyr status.

The opposition had earlier pledged support to the government in taking action against Pakistan following the terror attack.

On Monday, amid a growing chorus for a special session of parliament on the Pahalgam attack, Gandhi and leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge wrote two separate letters to Modi seeking a special session.
