New Delhi: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday claimed that the Congress’s allegations against his wife had connections with a Pakistani social media group and asked why “Pakistan was helping Gaurav Gogoi”.

Sarma made the claim during a press conference held a day after Congress chief spokesperson Pawan Khera on Sunday presented documents alleging that Sarma’s wife, Rinki Bhuyan Sarma, held passports of three countries and had stashed Rs 52,000 crore in Wyoming.

Sarma, who denied the Congress allegations as “baseless and fabricated”, has since made a series of social media posts to counter Khera’s claims.

Sarma alleges Pakistani links

"Yesterday, Pawan Khera and Gaurav Gogoi did two press conferences, one in Delhi, one in Guwahati... During our research, we found that the entire material of the press conference, which took place yesterday, was supplied by a Pakistani social media group,” Sarma said.

“In the last 10 days, Pakistan channels have done at least 11 talk shows regarding the election in Assam, which never happened earlier. And in every talk show, the conclusion is that Congress should win. Pakistan's link to yesterday's press conference has also now become very, very apparent,” he added.

In the press conference that lasted over an hour, Sarma then showed how his team registered an LLP in Wyoming by the name of GauravElizabeth786 on Monday saying that anyone can do so using a website and a credit card that allows international transactions.

Sarma’s presentation also elaborated on how passports and other documents presented by Khera were allegedly forged using Photoshop and Artificial Intelligence.

He further called it a “crime against the nation” while referring to Pakistan’s alleged involvement in the Indian state’s elections.

Gaurav Gogoi asks Sarma to deny the allegations

Hours after Sarma’s press conference, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi asked Sarma to swear on the Bhagwat Gita and deny his wife’s passports and assets held abroad.

"I told this yesterday, and I am again repeating it now — I can say under an oath on the Bhagavad Gita that I don't have any property in London as alleged by Mr. Sarma. Can he do that? I challenge him to come to a common place and to do the same under an oath on the Bhagavad Gita," Gogoi said.

In a post on X Gogoi asked Sarma to answer the questions raised by the Congress. "The questions are simple – does your wife possess a Golden Visa for Dubai? Do you or any family member own property there? Is the Golden visa on an Indian passport? Does any family member of Himanta Biswa Sarma operate a business in a foreign country? Has Himanta Biswa Sarma disclosed his or his family's wealth and properties abroad in his election affidavit? Mr. Sarma should welcome an investigation if he has nothing to hide," Gogoi said.

Assam Police team arrives at Khera's Delhi residence

An Assam Police team along with the Delhi police arrived at Khera's Delhi residence on Tuesday (April 7). The development comes a day after Sarma told the press that his wife had filed an FIR against Khera over the allegations made against her.

Sarma claimed that Khera had "run away" to Hyderabad following the police search at his Delhi residence.

The Congress hit back at the Bharatiya Janata Party leader calling the police search "witch hunt" and Sarma a "bully" using state machinery "to muzzle" the opposition.
