New Delhi: Prateek Yadav, the second son of former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Mulayam Singh Yadav, passed away in Lucknow on Wednesday (May 13). He was 38.
Confirming the news on social media platform X, the official handle of Samajwadi Party (SP) confirmed the news and wrote: “Saddened by the sudden demise of Shri Prateek Yadav. May his soul rest in peace. Heartfelt condolences.”
Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath also reached out to the family on X, sharing his condolences. “Saddened by the sudden demise of Prateek Yadav, son of ‘Padma Vibushan’ late Mulayam Singh Yadav and husband of Aparna Yadav, vice chairperson of UP State Women Commission. I pray to Lord Ram that the departed soul rests in peace and wishes the family the strength to cope with this loss,” Adityanath wrote on X.
Yadav's post-mortem report prepared by a panel of three doctors at Lucknow's King George Medical University Hospital has mentioned his cause of death to be "cardiorespiratory collapse due to massive pulmonary thromboembolism".
A total of six injuries have been mentioned in the post-mortem report, a copy of which was seen by The Wire. The nine-page report has specified that all the injuries were "antemortem" in nature, which means these were caused before death.
In the column related to probable time between injury and death, the post-mortem report mentions that while "injuries no. 1, 2 and 3 are about 5 to 7 days old", the remaining three injuries are "about one day old".
Earlier on Wednesday, PTI reported citing sources that “Yadav had suddenly fallen ill and [was] rushed to the civil hospital in the early hours of the day but was declared dead at the hospital”.
Speaking to The Wire, Dr Devesh Chandra Pandey, Chief Medical Superintendent at Lucknow's Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee (Civil) Hospital, said, "He [Yadav] was brought dead to the hospital at 5:55 am today. He was admitted to the ICU where ECG was done but there were no vital signs present."
"At around 5:30 am, a vehicle from his place had come to the hospital and our EMO (Emergency Medical Officer) went to the house from where he [Yadav] was shifted to the hospital, tests were conducted, but he had died by then," Dr Pandey added.
On being asked about the cause of death, Dr Pandey said, "After the Panchayatnama (identification of body) formality by the police, the body has been sent for post mortem which is currently underway."
Yadav was the stepbrother of SP president Akhilesh Yadav and son of Mulayam Yadav’s second wife, Sadhna Gupta.
In January 2026, controversy erupted after he had put out a post on Instagram targeting his wife Aparna Bisht Yadav. “I am going to divorce this selfish woman as soon as possible. She ruined my family ties. All she wants to become is famous and influential,” Yadav had then written on Instagram. Later, however, he retracted his earlier statement and put out another post on Instagram. “All is good,” Yadav had then written, along with a photo of his wife, who is a BJP leader.
