Agartala: The son of Telangana's governor Jishnu Dev Varma was among four individuals arrested on Tuesday, September 2, after TIPRA Motha MLA Philip Kumar Reang alleged that he received death threats from a group.

A regional party legislator, Reang took shelter at a colleague's quarter following these threats that took place at his government residence at the MLA hostel near ILS Hospital in Agartala.

After the incident, MLA Philip Kumar Reang filed a formal complaint alleging that three intoxicated individuals threatened him and his family during a private discussion at Government Quarter No. 209 on Monday night, around 10 pm.

The arrested individuals include Rajat Das, Partha Sarathi Chowdhury, Ajoy Roy and Pratik Dev Varma. Pratik is the son of Telangana's governor who earlier served as the deputy chief minister of Tripura.

"They wrongfully restrained me and started interfering in our family discussion. When I requested them to leave, they became more aggressive and started uttering violent and abusive words, threatening to slit my throat and kill me and my family," Reang said in his complaint.

Fearing for his safety, the TIPRA Motha MLA sought immediate shelter at fellow party member, MLA Biswajit Kalai's quarter.

"No instigation was made on my part. There seems to be a criminal conspiracy which resulted in a serious threat to my life last night," he claimed.

Director General of Police Shri Anurag visited the MLA hostel Tuesday morning to assess security arrangements, following the complaint. A delegation of TIPRA Motha MLAs subsequently met Tripura chief minister Manik Saha and demanded enhanced security measures.

Meanwhile, party MLA Ranjit Debbarma highlighted critical security lapses. "No registration is maintained of who comes and goes. Many unknown people enter the hostel premises for leisure activities, and even film shootings have taken place here. We have urged the CM to look into this matter," he said.
