Three BJP MPs Visit House of 1984 Riots Convict Sajjan Kumar to Condole His Death

Ramvir Bidhuri, Yogender Chandolia and Kamaljeet Sehrawat's visit to Kumar's family home has drawn widespread condemnation from political leaders, including BJP’s H.S. Phoolka who called for their boycott.

New Delhi: Days after Congress MP Deepinder Singh Hooda's condolence remarks on 1984 anti-Sikh riots convict Sajjan Kumar’s death led to a political storm, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday (August 29) found itself in a spot after three of its Lok Sabha MPs visited Kumar's house.

Ramvir Bidhuri, Yogender Chandolia and Kamaljeet Sehrawat recently paid a visit to Sajjan's family home to pay their respects, The Tribune has reported. The move led H.S. Phoolka, who had joined the BJP in April, to call for a boycott of the three MPs.

"Strongly condemn visit of 3 MPs Kamaljeet Sehrawat, Ramvir Singh Bidhuri and Yogender Chandolia to mass murderer Sajjan Kumar’s residence to offer condolences on his death," Phoolka wrote on X. "This when #BJP has always supported our quest for justice against this culprits and supported us in ensuring that he stays in jail. Sympathy should be reserved for victims and their families-many of whom live the horror of those days even till now. I call for the boycott of these 3 MPs."

The three BJP MPs from Delhi represent areas that were carved out of the former Outer Delhi constituency, of which Kumar was a representative in the Lok Sabha from the Congress. This includes Bidhuri's South Delhi, Sehrawat's West Delhi and Chandolia's North West Delhi constituencies.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Saurabh Bharadwaj, in a statement on X, questioned why the BJP's top leaders are sympathetic towards Kumar and whether BJP and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leaders had helped the Congress in targeting Sikhs in 1984.

"Some people do say that during the anti-Sikh riots in Delhi, local BJP/RSS leaders helped congress in targeting innocent Sikh families on the streets of Delhi. Is this the reason why top BJP leaders of Delhi are so sympathetic to Sajjan Kumar?" he wrote.

Earlier, when Rohtak MP Hooda faced widespread criticism for his remarks condoling Kumar's death, he denied having called him a "role model".
