On May 31 (Wednesday), Kukis and other tribal groups from Manipur organised a 'Tribal Solidarity Protest' at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar against the local BJP government in the state and chief minister N. Biren Singh. Slogans of “CM Biren… Down Down!” we’re raised by the protestors, along with the demand of imposing President’s Rule in the state.

The communal violence in Manipur between tribal and non-tribal communities is almost nearing to a month now and Union home minister Amit Shah is on a visit to the state.

As of now, over 80 people have been killed in the clash between the communities. The state and Union government have announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh and a job to the family member of the people who lost their lives in the violence.

The Wire spoke to several people at the Tribal Solidarity Protest to know their demands and stance on the ongoing violence in the state.

“Our request to the Central government is to look after the Biren Singh’s government which is functioning with dictatorship policy and is ignoring democratic principles. The state government’s policies are always one-sided and in favour of the majority Meitei community. We demand the Central government dismantle Biren Singh’s government and impose President’s rule as soon as possible,” said a protestor.
