From July 1, India will have a whole new set of criminal laws. The Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act will be replaced by three new laws drafted and passed by the previous Union government. The Wire‘s Jahnavi Sen speaks to senior advocate in the Supreme Court Sanjay Hegde and The Wire‘s national affairs editor Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty about concerns that have been raised about this overhaul of the criminal justice system – from the chaos that we are likely to witness to what it means for civil liberties.
