The Trinamool Congress (TMC), which ruled West Bengal for 15 years has lost power to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and that has sparked a crisis in Mamata Banerjee’s party. The legislative party split first, followed by the Lok Sabha leadership also leaving the TMC. In this interview, Lok Sabha MP Saugata Roy of the TMC tells journalist Karan Thapar that threats and inducements have let Operation Lotus work on other MPs and leaders of his party, however, he will not have quit the TMC. Roy is critical of TMC leaders “who sang praises of Abhishek Banerjee”, former CM Mamata Banerjee’s nephew who is caught up in a slew of controversies and allegations, calling them “opportunists”.
