New Delhi: A 12-year-old girl was raped and injured with a sharp object on her head and private parts at her west Delhi home on Tuesday.
Today, August 6, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal highlighted the crime by tweeting that he was “shaken to the core” by the incident. He added that perpetrators of such crime cannot be allowed to roam free.
The girl was assaulted when she was alone at home on Tuesday. Her parents were out for work at the time. The attacker(s) escaped after the incident and she was spotted lying in a pool of blood by neighbours, who informed her parents. Police were informed and she was first taken to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital. Amidst constant bleeding, she was shifted to AIIMS.
Deputy Commissioner of Police A. Koan told the media that information about the assault was received by police on Tuesday and a case under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code and POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act has been registered.
The victim was sexually assaulted and then hit multiple times on the head and face with a sharp object.
The police have started questioning the neighbours and have been trying to recover CCTV footage from the neighbourhood and around the house to identify the culprit(s).
Kejriwal tweeted that he has met the family of the victim and the doctors in AIIMS, where the child is undergoing treatment. The doctors have stated that the next 48 hours would be crucial for the girl.
Kejriwal said he has also spoken to the Delhi police commissioner about the incident and that all efforts would be made to get the harshest of punishments for those who have committed this crime. He also stated that the Delhi government would provide an immediate financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh to the victim’s family.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Commission for Women has also sought a report into the attack from the Delhi police. Stating that “reportedly, the girl was brutally raped and then the culprit(s) tried to kill her,” it said this attack was a “very serious matter”.
