Multiple media reports have highlighted that since around the third week of May, the Assam government has been implementing a policy of push back to handle alleged illegal immigrants. As the term implies, people are being pushed back across the border into Bangladesh.

Some of these people were found to be illegal immigrants by Foreigners Tribunals but have cases pending in high courts and the Supreme Court. More importantly, as senior advocate Sanjay Hegde points out, the process by which Foreigners Tribunals often deem people to be illegal is deeply flawed and suspicious.
