New Delhi: A Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) team in Assam was detained by state police on Sunday, September 27, in Guwahati, the outfit has said. The team was detained along with the party's co-convenor and chief spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka, who told mediapersons that the state government was "afraid" of CJP's review of state-run schools.

Ranka also alleged in a post on X that the elections in Assam were "rigged" during the special revision (SR) of voter lists in the state. "Himanta Mama is scared that under the guise of Gyanesh, the rigging in the Assam elections might get exposed...Himanta Mama is scared that under the guise of Gyanesh [Kumar, the chief election commissioner], the rigging in the Assam elections might get exposed."

A statement issued by CJP on Sunday said Assam Police barricaded the venue of the party's first regional volunteers’ meet-up in the state capital and detained Ranka along with volunteers as they were going to the site. Ranka arrived in Guwahati on Saturday, September 26, and was scheduled to address the meeting.

"Authorities deployed tear-gas equipment and systematically intercepted incoming attendees," said the statement. The CJP could not immediately confirm  how many of its volunteers were detained. Their locations also remain unknown as the police stations they were taken to were not disclosed.

An earlier venue for the volunteers from Assam and other northeastern states were to assemble had pulled out amid what CJP described as "intense state pressure" in the statement. The outfit said lawyers for the CJP team were not allowed to meet the detained activists.

The CJP said it would continue to do "grassroots groundwork" in Assam and that its "School Thik Karo" campaign and outreach to families affected by the SR of electoral rolls would not stop.

CJP has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Ranka and other detained volunteers, and sought an explanation for the Assam Police blockade and "forced cancellation" of the original venue.
