New Delhi: A social media content creator from Madhya Pradesh's Niwari district, Yashpal Soni, has been booked for allegedly using "highly abusive" language against former education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Bharatiya Janata Party and the Delhi Police in an Instagram reel posted during the recent nationwide student protests.

Soni, who was taken into custody for questioning on Thursday (July 23), has been charged under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita's (BNS) Section 296(a), concerning obscene acts and songs in a public place, and Section 352, concerning insult with the intent to provoke breach of peace.

Niwari Superintendent of Police Ray Singh Narwaria told The Hindu that Soni was "way out of the purview of freedom of expression" and had used objectionable curse words in the video. "He himself realised his mistake and apologised for it," Narwaria added.

In the video clip, titled "Desh dobara gulam ho gaya hai (the nation has been enslaved again)," Soni could allegedly be heard using expletives against Pradhan and other BJP leaders over the alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG examination and abusing the Delhi Police over their violent crackdown on student protesters.

The complaint was filed by local BJP leaders, led by block president Kamlesh Chourasiya, after which Soni was taken in for questioning. The BJP leaders also called for Soni's social media accounts to restricted, reported The Hindu.

The reel has since been removed from Soni's account.

Thousands of protesters had taken to the streets last week to demand Pradhan's resignation over the lack of accountability for the failures in the national education system. In light of the overwhelming, and rare, pan-India anti-incumbency protests against the ruling BJP government, Pradhan finally submitted his resignation on Saturday (July 25) and was replaced by Union minister Pralhad Joshi.
